Ranthambore Safari Zones 1–10: Which Zone Is Best for Tiger Sightings?
Updated September 2026 · 7 min read · BharatMile team, Jaipur
Ranthambore National Park is divided into 10 safari zones. Every safari vehicle is allotted one zone and stays in it for the whole drive, so the zone decides what you see — the lakes below the fort, a quiet valley or open grassland. Here's what each zone is like and how to think about it.
Core zones vs buffer zones
- Zones 1–5 (core): the heart of the tiger reserve — the lakes, Ranthambore Fort and the best-known tiger territories. Most visitors ask for these.
- Zones 6–10 (buffer): on the edges of the park. More rugged and far quieter, with fewer vehicles — a good choice when core zones are full or you prefer a less crowded drive.
All 10 zones at a glance
| Zone | Type | Key landmarks | What it's like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zone 1 | Core | Tuti ka Nala, Sultanpur, Peela Pani, Gada Dub | Entered through Singhdwar. Several water points and good tiger and leopard territory. |
| Zone 2 | Core | Jogi Mahal, Nal Ghati, Phuta Kot, Lahpur | Many water holes and varied terrain; one of the most consistent zones for sightings. |
| Zone 3 | Core | Padam Talao, Rajbagh lake, Mandook, High Point | The famous lakes below Ranthambore Fort — the classic 'tiger by the lake' landscape. Often the first request. |
| Zone 4 | Core | Malik Talao, Lakarda, Adidaant, Tamakhan | Malik Talao and open valleys. Very popular, and dependable in the dry months. |
| Zone 5 | Core | Kachida, Bakola, Jokha, Anantpura | Shares the Singhdwar entry with Zone 4; the Kachida valley is quieter than the lake zones. |
| Zone 6 | Buffer | Kundal, Soleshwar, Kala Pani, Khabli | Open grasslands; known for birds, including vultures. |
| Zone 7 | Buffer | Chidikho, Jamoda, Kushalipura | Rugged, less-visited forest with fewer vehicles. |
| Zone 8 | Buffer | Balas, Neemli Dang, Kali Bhat, Mahakho | Quiet buffer zone next to Zone 7. |
| Zone 9 | Buffer | Kuwalji, Chakal river area | Further from the main gates, along the Chakal river; good birdlife. |
| Zone 10 | Buffer | Halonda, Aantri, Bodal | Remote and rugged, with very few vehicles. |
Which zone is best for tigers?
Zones 3 and 4 get the most requests. Zone 3 has Padam Talao and Rajbagh — the lakes below the fort where some of Ranthambore's most famous tiger photographs were taken — and Zone 4 has Malik Talao. In the hot months, when smaller water holes dry up, animals gather near these lakes.
That said, no zone guarantees a tiger. Tigers hold territories across the park and move between zones, and Zones 1, 2 and 5 regularly produce excellent sightings too. The single best way to improve your odds is to do two safaris — ideally a morning and an afternoon.
How zones are allotted
The forest department allots zones at booking — you cannot simply pick one. When you book with us we request your preferred zone, and if it isn't available we tell you your options before confirming. Tell us early: the popular core zones fill first, especially from October to March and on holiday weekends.
Which zone suits you?
- First safari: ask for a core zone (1–5), ideally 3 or 4 for the lakes.
- Photography: Zones 2, 3 and 4 give lake and water-hole backdrops.
- Families with young kids: any core zone, in a Gypsy rather than a Canter for comfort and privacy.
- Birdwatchers: the buffer zones — Zone 6 (Kundal) and Zone 9 (along the Chakal river).
- Core zones sold out: a buffer zone still means a real jungle drive with far fewer vehicles.
